Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Shri Satish Chandra Dubey has called for a stronger balance between coal production and environmental sustainability while reviewing the operational performance and long-term strategic roadmap of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) during an official visit on 13 May 2026.

The visit focused on assessing ECL’s operational achievements, mine safety standards, production efficiency, environmental initiatives and infrastructure modernisation as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen India’s energy security while advancing more sustainable mining practices.

Officials described the review as part of the Ministry of Coal’s broader strategy to modernise coal operations, improve logistics efficiency and integrate cleaner technologies into India’s energy supply chain.

High-Level Review Held at Kunustoria Area

During the visit to ECL’s Kunustoria Area, the Minister was welcomed by:

  • Shri Satish Jha, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), ECL

  • Md. Anzar Alam, Director (Finance)

  • Shri Gunjan Kumar Sinha, Director (HR)

  • Shri Girish Gopinathan Nair, Director (Technical)

Senior executives, General Managers and departmental heads also attended the review meeting.

A ceremonial Guard of Honour was presented to the Minister during the visit.

Focus on Balancing Coal Production with Sustainability

Addressing the review meeting, Shri Dubey stressed the importance of balancing operational expansion with environmental responsibility.

He encouraged the adoption of:

  • Sustainable mining practices

  • Eco-conscious operational systems

  • Modern mining technologies

  • Efficient resource utilisation

  • Improved safety mechanisms

The Minister highlighted that India’s growing energy needs must be met alongside stronger environmental safeguards and long-term ecological sustainability.

Industry experts say the coal sector is increasingly under pressure to modernise operations while reducing environmental impact amid rising global focus on cleaner energy transitions.

ECL Praised for Strong 2025–26 Performance

Shri Dubey congratulated Team ECL for its operational performance during the 2025–26 financial year despite what he described as significant operational challenges.

Eastern Coalfields Limited, one of the oldest subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), remains a critical contributor to India’s coal production and energy supply chain.

The Minister expressed confidence in the company’s future growth trajectory and acknowledged its continued role in supporting national energy requirements.

Scientific Mine Closure and Land Reclamation Highlighted

One of the major areas of appreciation during the visit was ECL’s implementation of scientific mine closure and land reclamation initiatives.

The Minister commended the company’s efforts toward:

  • Systematic reclamation of mined-out land

  • Ecological restoration

  • Sustainable land use

  • Environmental conservation

  • Community-oriented redevelopment

Officials said these projects aim to repurpose exhausted mining areas into productive and environmentally sustainable spaces.

Dubey emphasised that responsible mine closure practices are essential for:

  • Long-term sustainability

  • Green development

  • Future infrastructure projects

  • Community welfare

  • Ecological recovery

“These initiatives contribute significantly towards ecological restoration, sustainable land use, environmental conservation, and the socio-economic development of local communities residing in and around mining areas,” the Minister said.

Cleaner Coal Transportation Through First Mile Connectivity

The Minister also praised ECL’s efforts to modernise coal evacuation systems through expansion of First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects.

FMC systems are designed to reduce dependence on road-based coal transportation by integrating mechanised loading and rail connectivity systems closer to mining sites.

According to the Ministry, FMC projects help:

  • Minimise air pollution

  • Reduce road congestion

  • Improve logistical efficiency

  • Accelerate coal evacuation

  • Enhance transportation safety

  • Lower environmental impact

Industry analysts say FMC expansion is becoming a major priority across India’s coal sector as companies seek to improve supply-chain efficiency and reduce operational emissions.

Renewable Energy Integration Gains Momentum

Shri Dubey also acknowledged ECL’s growing focus on renewable energy integration within mining operations.

The Minister highlighted the company’s efforts toward:

  • Expanding solar power installations

  • Reducing operational carbon emissions

  • Improving energy efficiency

  • Supporting cleaner mining operations

Officials said renewable energy adoption within coal mining infrastructure reflects broader efforts to make traditional energy sectors more environmentally responsible.

The integration of solar energy into mining operations is increasingly being viewed as an important step toward reducing the carbon footprint of coal production activities.

Minister Calls for Improved Coal Stock Verification

During the review, Shri Dubey advised ECL to strengthen systematic and periodic stock verification procedures to ensure accuracy in declared coal stock levels.

Efficient inventory management and transparent reporting remain key operational priorities for the coal sector, particularly amid increasing scrutiny around production efficiency and supply-chain management.

West Asia Tensions Highlight India’s Energy Security Concerns

Referring to ongoing geopolitical developments in West Asia and global energy market uncertainties, the Minister stressed the strategic importance of domestic coal production in maintaining India’s energy security.

He noted that global energy disruptions reinforce the need for:

  • Operational resilience

  • Efficient resource utilisation

  • Stable domestic energy supply

  • Stronger infrastructure preparedness

Analysts say geopolitical tensions and global energy volatility have increased focus on strengthening India’s domestic energy production capacity.

ECL Seen as Strategic Energy Contributor

The Minister reiterated that Eastern Coalfields Limited continues to play a crucial role in supporting India’s energy infrastructure.

He praised the dedication of Team ECL and acknowledged the company’s contribution toward:

  • National coal supply

  • Power generation support

  • Industrial energy requirements

  • Economic stability

“Recognizing ECL as one of the oldest and prominent subsidiaries of Coal India Limited, Shri Dubey conveyed confidence in the company’s future prospects and appreciated its continued contribution towards meeting the nation’s coal and energy requirements,” officials stated.

Coal Sector Undergoing Modernisation Shift

The review reflects broader efforts within India’s coal sector to modernise operations while addressing environmental concerns and improving efficiency.

Key priorities currently shaping the sector include:

  • Mechanisation of mining operations

  • Cleaner transportation systems

  • Renewable energy integration

  • Environmental restoration

  • Safety enhancement

  • Technology adoption

  • Sustainable mining frameworks

The government has increasingly emphasised that coal will continue to play a critical role in India’s energy mix even as renewable energy capacity expands.

Sustainable Mining Emerging as National Focus

Officials say the Ministry of Coal is working toward creating a more balanced mining ecosystem that combines:

  • Energy security

  • Economic growth

  • Environmental responsibility

  • Community development

  • Technological modernisation

The emphasis on scientific mine closure, FMC systems and renewable integration signals growing recognition that future coal operations must align more closely with sustainability objectives.

Long-Term Vision for Energy and Community Development

The Minister concluded by sharing policy guidance and strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing productivity and supporting ECL’s long-term growth.

Government officials said future reforms in the coal sector will increasingly focus on:

  • Sustainable extraction practices

  • Cleaner logistics systems

  • Resource optimisation

  • Community-centric development

  • Green rehabilitation projects

As India continues balancing industrial growth with climate and sustainability priorities, coal companies like ECL are expected to play a central role in ensuring reliable energy supply while transitioning toward more environmentally responsible operational models.
