Uttarakhand Court Pressures Government on Lokayukta Appointment Delay

The Uttarakhand High Court has called upon the state government to explain its delay in appointing a Lokayukta, following repeated extensions requested by the government. The court, during a Public Interest Litigation hearing, expressed frustration over missed deadlines and sought clarity on existing compliance measures.

Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and Justice Subhash Upadhyay led the hearing, pressing the advocate general for an update on the process. The government has been given a short timeframe to clarify its stance and outline a meeting schedule for the search committee.

The court, dissatisfied with earlier justifications, emphasized that the government had previously been granted time extensions without progress. With June 16 set as the next hearing date, the court insists on receiving concrete decisions from the search committee by then.
