The Judges Inquiry Committee has submitted its investigative report on the allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The judge's resignation, after the discovery of unaccounted cash from his residence, has rendered impeachment proceedings "infructuous" according to official sources. The report, made in compliance with the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, will be presented before both Houses of Parliament.

The parliamentary monsoon session, expected to begin in July, will be the setting for the report's formal presentation and discussion. Formal proceedings were initially set in motion last year, demanding accountability from the judge over hidden cash discovered amid a fire at his official residence. The three-member inquiry committee's findings have now cast the spotlight on procedural aspects of judicial resignations and parliamentary impeachments.

Despite his resignation, Justice Varma's name currently remains listed as an Allahabad High Court judge. According to legal precedents, the resignation process, which involves notifying the President and a formal announcement, is expected to resolve the procedural formalities surrounding Varma's status. Parliament will soon have the opportunity to deliberate on the submitted report and its implications.
