The Supreme Court has confirmed the Election Commission's power to conduct Special Intensive Revisions (SIR) on voter rolls, deeming the process vital to upholding the constitutional mandate for fair and impartial elections. Headed by Surya Kant, the bench agreed that the exercise aligns with legal frameworks established by Article 324 and the Representation of the People Act.

The court's decision came amidst political outcry, including criticism from Congress and praise from the BJP. Alongside Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Surya Kant led the ruling which dismissed assertions that SIR efforts overstepped the Election Commission's powers. It underlined the revision's intention to ensure voter list accuracy and integrity, especially in states like Bihar given urbanization trends.

While some viewed SIR as discriminatory, others noted the need for procedural safeguards to maintain electoral credibility. The verdict addressed concerns regarding citizenship verification, mandating that deleted names due to alleged citizenship issues must be reviewed by competent authorities promptly before any elections.

The ruling supports the SIR's role in sustaining democratic processes and recommends a review for those unfairly removed due to migration. As this decision sets the stage for upcoming elections, it reiterates the Election Commission's commitment to just electoral practices.
