Kalyan Banerjee Clarifies Limited Scope of Supreme Court Ruling on Electoral Roll Revision

Trinamool Congress's Kalyan Banerjee emphasized that the Supreme Court's ruling on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is restricted to Bihar and doesn't apply nationwide. While the court upheld the Election Commission's authority, it cannot judge citizenship, which is to be decided by the competent authority.

Kalyan Banerjee, a prominent figure from the Trinamool Congress, has stated that the Supreme Court's recent judgment regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls pertains only to Bihar, dismissing its relevance as a national precedent. He noted that issues faced in West Bengal are distinct and require separate consideration.

Highlighting a critical part of the ruling, Banerjee mentioned that the court indicated the Election Commission lacks the power to make decisions about citizenship. The court directed that citizenship questions leading to the removal of names from the electoral roll must be referred to the responsible authority under the Citizenship Act, ensuring that the ultimate decision on citizenship status is not within the Election Commission's purview.
