Congress Criticizes Supreme Court's SIR Verdict, Cites Implementation Issues

The Congress party has raised concerns regarding the Supreme Court's recent upholding of the constitutional validity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. While the verdict supports the legal foundation of the exercise, Congress argues that it leaves many questions unanswered about its execution.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi critiqued the manner in which the Election Commission conducted the SIR, suggesting the process had implementation flaws. He emphasized that the substance and intent of the process took precedence over its form, and condemned the lack of attention to significant issues, such as Aadhaar and ration card deficiencies affecting voter eligibility.

Senior party member Jairam Ramesh also emphasized the discrepancies, suggesting the Supreme Court's legitimacy does not resolve the underlying implementation malpractices. Despite the Supreme Court's assertion that voter list deletions do not equate to citizenship loss, Congress questioned the Election Commission's decision-making process, especially given time constraints and selective geographical applications.

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, affirmed the Election Commission's power under the Constitution to revise voter rolls. Yet, Congress insists on addressing the procedural lapses and errors highlighted by various parties and NGOs to ensure the integrity and fairness of electoral processes.
