President Droupadi Murmu has hailed Sikkim as a model for sustainable development, environmental conservation, and educational progress while addressing the seventh convocation ceremony of Sikkim University in Gangtok.

During her visit to the Himalayan state on 27 May 2026, the President praised Sikkim’s achievements in organic farming, literacy, ecological protection, and social responsibility, describing the state as an inspiration for the entire nation.

The event highlighted the growing national focus on sustainable development, inclusive growth, and the strategic importance of India’s North-Eastern region in the country’s long-term progress.

President Highlights Sikkim’s Unique Cultural and Ecological Identity

Addressing students, faculty members, and dignitaries at the convocation ceremony, President Murmu spoke about Sikkim’s distinct identity rooted in:

  • Natural beauty

  • Rich biodiversity

  • Cultural heritage

  • Ecological consciousness

She particularly referred to Mount Kanchenjunga, one of the world’s highest Himalayan peaks, describing it as a priceless natural gift to the state and a deeply revered spiritual symbol for the people of Sikkim.

“The people of Sikkim revere this peak as their guardian deity,” the President said, noting that the state’s residents demonstrate a profound commitment to preserving and nurturing nature.

Sikkim Recognised for Sustainable Development Model

President Murmu praised Sikkim for becoming India’s first fully organic state in 2016, calling it a landmark achievement in environmentally sustainable governance.

She said Sikkim has demonstrated that:

Calling it a “matter of pride” for the entire nation, she noted that the milestone reflects the state’s strong commitment to education and social development.

  • ‘Ama Didi Bahini Bus Sewa’ — special pink buses for women

  • Resource Recovery vehicles for solid waste management

The women-focused bus service is aimed at improving:

  • Safe public transportation

  • Women’s mobility

  • Accessibility and convenience

The solid waste management vehicles are part of broader efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness in the state.
