Supreme Court Delays Sealing of Structures Near Delhi Golf Club Monument

The Supreme Court of India has postponed enforcement of its previous directive to seal structures situated within a 100-metre restricted zone of a protected monument close to the Delhi Golf Club's entrance. This delay, which holds until July 22, follows a request made by the Delhi Golf Club for additional time to suggest resolutions.

The decision, which came after senior advocate Kapil Sibal's appeal on behalf of the golf club, was issued by a bench comprising Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and N Kotiswar Singh. The bench acknowledged the need for exceptional consideration despite previously finding no reason for reconsideration.

Last Wednesday's hearing originally mandated a cessation of all activities in proximity to Lal Bangla I & II, highlighting the Supreme Court's concern over many monuments' neglected conditions. Furthermore, the court deferred a similar order that restricted activities near nine other structures at the club.

The court has questioned the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for its lack of protective action around these monuments, instructing the ASI director to provide an explanation at the next hearing. The heritage site issue was initiated by a case from Rajeev Suri regarding the encroachment of a Lodhi-era monument in Delhi's Defence Colony.
