British Sikh Man Convicted of Murder After Claiming Self-Defence

A British Sikh man has been found guilty of murdering a student in southeast England, after claiming that the large knife he carried was for self-defence and religious reasons. Twenty-three-year-old Vickrum Digwa was convicted for the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, whom he stabbed five times.

The conviction came despite Digwa's assertion that racial threats led to the attack, with his mother Kiran Kaur also found guilty of aiding an offender. Judge William Mousley characterized the case as particularly challenging, with sentences expected soon.

The trial has spotlighted legal interpretations around a Sikh's right to wear a kirpan, an issue referenced by the prosecution while emphasizing the trial focused solely on a murder charge.
