Mizoram Government Faces Backlash Over Re-Hiring of Retired Tourism Official

The Mizoram Government reversed its decision after intense protests concerning the reemployment of retired official R Lalrodingi as Director of Tourism. The controversy began when Lalrodingi, formerly Additional Director of Commerce and Industries, was reappointed shortly after her retirement, sparking protests from the influential student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP).

The MZP argued that re-hiring retired officials like Lalrodingi blocks advancement opportunities for current employees and limits job prospects for young graduates. In response, Lalrodingi resigned from the tourism post, citing the disruption caused by the protests as the reason for her departure. Her resignation prompted MZP to cancel further protest plans.

The move to reappoint Lalrodingi had initially been withdrawn after discussions with the chief minister but was later reinstated, leading to protests that shut down the Tourism Directorate for several days. Ultimately, following the resignation, the government can now refocus on advancing tourism development initiatives without further disruptions.
