Latvian Parliament Installs New Government Amid Drone Incident Fallout

Latvia's parliament has endorsed a new coalition government led by Andris Kulbergs from the United List party, following the collapse of the previous administration due to disagreements over the management of drone incidents. This government aims to lead until parliamentary elections take place in October.

The coalition, confirmed with 66 votes in favor and 25 against, comprises four parties including New Unity and retains Baiba Braže as foreign minister. The prior administration, led by Evika Silina, dissolved after losing support due to contentious handling of supposed Ukrainian drone incursions into Latvian airspace.

The drone incidents, believed to involve devices en route to Russia, highlighted challenges in Latvia's defense capabilities. Silina's coalition was undermined when Defence Minister Andris Spruds resigned amid scrutiny. The situation has opened discussions on Latvia's preparedness against potential threats, given its geographical proximity to Russia and Belarus.
