Activist Manoj Jarange announced an indefinite hunger strike, commencing Saturday morning, in response to what he describes as discriminatory treatment of the Maratha community by the Maharashtra government. Jarange, determined not to relent until demands are met in writing, emphasized the community's need for official recognition within the reservation framework.
In a recent meeting with state minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, who heads a sub-committee for the Maratha community, Jarange proposed establishing a dedicated ministry for the Marathas, akin to one for Other Backward Classes. He expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of issuing Kunbi certificates necessary for availing the OBC quota, criticizing the Shinde Committee for slow progress.
Despite the government's assurances to accelerate certificate distribution, Jarange remains steadfast. He highlighted past agreements to withdraw legal cases against activists and lambasted police action against Maratha youths. Jarange's protest demands urgent government action to avoid escalating unrest among the community.
