No Current Plan to Make Cow National Animal or Ban Cow Slaughter, Says Meghwal

Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Law Minister, clarified that there is no active proposal for considering cows as the national animal or enacting a countrywide prohibition on cow slaughter. Such topics are frequently brought up by different organizations but remain outside Cabinet discussion currently.

Decisions related to cow slaughter laws differ state by state and are often driven by local needs and deliberations. Meghwal mentioned that representations on this matter are consistently presented to government officials and Members of Parliament.

The debate is still ongoing among various groups, some advocating for a national animal status for cows as a means to reduce tensions, while others express concerns regarding religious freedoms. However, Meghwal reiterated that the issue is not at a stage where the government is considering taking action.

Notably, both Hindu and Muslim leaders have shared perspectives on this topic. Certain Muslim leaders have suggested a national ban could ease social tensions, while former vice-president Hamid Ansari supported the idea if it would help resolve disputes related to cow slaughter.
