India and Bangladesh Set to Hold Key Border Discussions in Delhi

The governments of India and Bangladesh are preparing for pivotal border discussions set to occur in Delhi. This will be the first meeting of its kind since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assumed power in Dhaka earlier this year.
Heading the Bangladeshi delegation is Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), while the Indian side will be led by Praveen Kumar, Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF). The meeting is scheduled from June 8 to June 11 and is expected to cover key issues like border fencing, the prevention of cross-border crimes, and the management of illegal migrants.
The talks are significant as they aim to address long-standing issues concerning cross-border activities, including attacks on BSF personnel and the illegal movement of migrants. Attending officials plan to sign a joint record of discussions on June 11.
India shares a lengthy 4,096 km border with Bangladesh, yet around 860 km remains unfenced due to challenging terrain. Efforts are already underway, with the states of West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, and Mizoram sharing portions of the border, to enhance security and prevent illegal activities. The Indian government remains committed to its strategy of 'detect, delete, and deport' regarding illegal entries.
