Uttarakhand has significantly increased its water treatment capabilities from 152.9 MLD in 2015 to 428 MLD in 2024, with expectations to reach 700 MLD upon completing ongoing projects. Uttarakhand has reported a remarkable expansion in its used water treatment capabilities, growing from 152.9 million litres per day (MLD) across 24 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in 2015 to 428 MLD across 69 STPs by 2024. The findings are part of a report by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in collaboration with Dasra, a philanthropy-focused organization.
The report, revealed during the Uttarakhand Urban Sanitation Conclave 2026 held in Dehradun, anticipates further growth to nearly 700 MLD upon the completion of ongoing projects. It highlights Uttarakhand's strategic successes including improved sanitation coverage and regulatory frameworks initiated since 2008, with significant milestones such as achieving open defecation free status in 2018.
The analysis spotlights four 'lighthouse cities,' namely Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rudrapur, and Lalkuan, which serve as exemplary models of adaptive and scalable sanitation solutions. These cities provide innovative approaches that could be replicated across other urban areas in the state, enhancing overall sanitation outcomes sustainably.
