Historic Varanasi Goat Market Closed Due to Sanitation Concerns

Authorities in Varanasi have taken the unprecedented step of sealing the historic Benia Bagh Bakra Market, a key venue for goat trading ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, citing unsanitary conditions and overcrowding. This decision has sparked significant discontent among traders who rely on the market for business during this festive period.

Himanshu Nagpal, the Municipal Commissioner, reported that the market's license was revoked following a thorough inspection prompted by numerous complaints. Subsequently, officials delivered eviction orders to traders, effectively giving them three days to vacate. Despite resistance from the traders, the market was ultimately vacated and secured with police support. Traders argue that shutting down a market that has served them for decades is unjust, particularly as it leaves them scrambling for alternatives just days before the festival.
