NPP Faces Uncertain Future Despite Local Council Dominance
The National People's Power party emerged as the largest party in 265 local councils across Sri Lanka but faces challenges in forming administrations due to opposition majorities in multiple councils. The main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, secured only 14 councils with 21% of votes. The elections were postponed due to an economic crisis.

The National People's Power (NPP), led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has taken the lead in 265 out of 339 local municipal councils in Sri Lanka, based on results released Wednesday. Despite this achievement, the NPP failed to secure a position in Colombo, the capital city.
Official election results indicate challenges ahead, as opposition parties collectively outnumber the NPP in multiple councils, raising doubts about its ability to form administrations. The commission reported that the NPP received 43% of votes, a decline from the 68% seen in last year's parliamentary elections.
Opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) captured just 14 councils with 21% of the votes. The local council elections saw over 70% voter turnout, marking a significant test following the postponement in 2023 due to economic turmoil.
