The Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. This move aligns with an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump. However, the bill's future remains uncertain as it progresses to the Senate, where it faces significant opposition.

The renaming initiative was spearheaded by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch supporter of Trump. The Gulf, historically known as the Gulf of Mexico for over four centuries, plays a vital role in the geography of both the U.S. and Mexico, linking to the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

In the Senate, where Republicans have a 53-47 majority, advancing the bill will require a super-majority of 60 votes. This makes it unlikely to pass, but if it does, it could cement the name change, making it more challenging for future presidents to reverse.
