Robert Prevost has become the first pope from the United States, adopting the name Leo XIV. Hailing from Chicago, Prevost is relatively unknown on the global scene, but he has had a significant missionary career in Peru, where he also holds citizenship. Raised to cardinal status in 2023, Prevost has succeeded Pope Francis.
Rev. Mark Francis, a long-time friend of Prevost, praised his commitment to the Church's outreach to the poor and social justice causes. Describing him as warm and friendly, Francis said Prevost possesses a wry sense of humor without seeking the spotlight.
The new pope's stance on key issues remains largely uncertain. Skeptical about ordaining women, his record on addressing sexual abuse cases is mixed. Known for helping migrants and advocating for evangelization, Prevost emphasizes openness and inclusivity within the Church.
