In a groundbreaking move towards lasting peace, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) declared on Monday its decision to disband and lay down arms, ending over four decades of brutal armed conflict with Turkiye.
The announcement, conveyed by Firat News Agency, followed days after the PKK held a significant party congress in northern Iraq. PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999, had previously called for this monumental decision.
This act could signal the conclusion of a violent insurgency launched in 1984, which resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives and earned the group a terrorist designation by Turkiye and its Western allies. Conditions for peace include establishing a legal framework for negotiations.
