Kremlin Endorses Trump's Stance on Russia and G8 Debacle
The Kremlin agreed with Donald Trump's statement that expelling Russia from the G8 was a mistake. The G7, according to both Trump and the Kremlin, lacks significance for Russia now. They suggest Russia's absence contributed to the 2022 Ukraine invasion and question G7's relevance amid global shifts.
The Kremlin has backed U.S. President Donald Trump's assertion that ousting Russia from the G8 in 2014 was a strategic error. Trump, during the Group of Seven summit in Canada, remarked that the decision to expel Russia after the annexation of Crimea brought more harm than good.
He suggested that Russia might not have invaded Ukraine in 2022 had President Vladimir Putin not been excluded from the G8. Trump added that Putin does not engage with those who removed him, with which Trump expressed agreement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed Trump's sentiment, stating that the exclusion was indeed a 'big mistake.' Peskov argued that with changing global dynamics and the diminished role of G7 nations in the world economy, the group seems 'dull' and 'rather useless' to Russia now.
