Former Sandinista Major Roberto Samcam Killed in Exile

Roberto Samcam, a former Nicaraguan military figure and outspoken critic of the country's government, was tragically killed in Costa Rica on Thursday. According to his wife, Claudia Vargas, Samcam was shot multiple times by an assailant posing as a delivery driver at his residence near San Jose.

Samcam, known for his vocal opposition to President Daniel Ortega, fled Nicaragua after anti-government protests erupted in 2018, initially over social security reforms. These demonstrations quickly escalated to demands for democratic change but were reportedly met with brutal crackdowns by the authorities.

Costa Rican police have verified the incident, noting that the gunman escaped on a motorcycle. The Nicaraguan government has yet to comment on the killing, but the incident echoes the attempted assassinations of other Ortega critics in Costa Rica.
