Tensions Surge as BJP Leader and Doctor Detained in Kolkata

Tensions significantly escalated in South Kolkata's Bhabanipur on Friday evening following the detention of West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and London-based doctor Rajatshubhra Bandyopadhyay by the police. The brief roadside meeting led to a political uproar and triggered protests.

The situation unfolded after Majumdar, a Union minister of state, defied police restrictions, using a motorbike to visit Bhabanipur for 'Paschimbanga Dibas' celebrations. He honored Syama Prasad Mookerjee's statue and planned a visit to Bandyopadhyay's residence. However, his convoy was halted by police who claimed the doctor was not at home.

BJP released a video showing Bandyopadhyay at home, inflaming tensions and leading to argumentative clashes between BJP workers and police, with accusations of governmental misuse of police power. In the midst of this, Bandyopadhyay met Majumdar, only for both to be detained and taken to Lalbazar police headquarters, sparking further controversy.
