The high-stakes Nilambur byelection in Kerala witnessed a steady lead for Aryadan Shoukath, the UDF candidate, against M Swaraj, the contestant from the ruling LDF.
Figures from the Election Commission indicated that by the seventh round, Shoukath, son of late Congress stalwart Aryadan Muhammed, was ahead by 5,123 votes. The independent candidate, P V Anvar, also delivered a surprisingly strong performance.
Beginning at 8 am, the vote counting process took place at Chungathara Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School, starting with postal ballots and followed by EVM votes. With 19 rounds of counting across 263 booths, the political atmosphere remains tense as the byelection serves as a critical test for the LDF government's mid-term standing and a potential boost for UDF before the upcoming Assembly polls.
