On Wednesday, BJP President J P Nadda accused the Congress of perpetuating a dictatorial mindset akin to the Emergency period imposed 50 years ago. Nadda claimed the Congress still harbors the belief that governance is the right of one familial dynasty alone.
Speaking on the Emergency's 50th anniversary, Nadda criticized Congress's reluctance to accept a leader from a modest background like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He pointed out that despite frequent references to the Constitution by Rahul Gandhi and his party, Congress has yet to apologize for its actions during the 21-month Emergency when rights were curtailed, media censored, and opposition leaders jailed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Nadda urged the public to remember this "black chapter" of Indian democracy, describing how Modi campaigned against Congress excesses. Highlighting Modi's efforts and a new book entitled "The Emergency Diaries - Years that Forged a Leader," Nadda continued to accuse Congress of punishing dissent, as evident in past actions against journalists during elections.
