  • India

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh characterized the Emergency of 1975 as a grim episode in India's democratic history during a Wednesday statement. Singh highlighted the need to prevent democracy from being taken hostage in the future.

Posting on X, Singh stated that the Emergency, imposed 50 years ago by the Congress government, was a severe infringement on the Constitution, civil liberties, press freedom, and democratic values. He emphasized that during this period, censorship was rampant and fear pervasive.

Singh called for a collective pledge to prevent the recurrence of such tyranny, insisting that democracy represents a sacred responsibility. In solidarity, the BJP Manipur unit also commemorated the Emergency, saluting those who protested against this severe episode in Indian politics.
