The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has taken disciplinary action against Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra, issuing a show cause notice over his controversial remarks concerning the alleged gangrape of a law student in Kolkata's Kasba area on June 25.
The notice, signed by TMC President and Rajya Sabha MP Subrata Bakshi, demands an explanation from Mitra within three days, pointing out that his comments were "unwanted, unnecessary, and insensitive," and harmed the party's image. The remarks, which suggested victim-blaming, have widely been criticized.
Following the incident on June 25, where a female student was allegedly assaulted, police have arrested three individuals, including the primary suspect. A special team has been deployed to investigate further. Mitra's comments, indicating that the victim's actions partially caused the tragedy, prompted strong backlash and the subsequent party action.
