Jagdeep Dhankhar: A Legacy of Unfinished Terms

Jagdeep Dhankhar becomes the third vice president of India to resign mid-term. The trend began with Vice President V V Giri in 1969 and was followed by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in 2007. Several vice presidents have resigned to contest presidential elections, a move not completed by some in office.

Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday marked his place in history as the third vice president of India to resign mid-term, continuing a pattern set by his predecessors.

The precedent was set by V V Giri, who stepped down on July 2, 1969, to run for president after serving as acting president following the death of Zakir Hussain. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat added to this trend in 2007 after a presidential defeat against Pratibha Patil.

This pattern reflects a career path shared by several vice presidents, including R Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, and K R Narayanan, who all ascended to the presidency, unlike Krishan Kant, who passed away in office.
