In a striking move, opposition parties have voiced strong criticism against the Indian government following President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports. The tariff, alongside penalties, has been seen as a major diplomatic blow, sparking frustrations over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's perceived inaction.
Congress's general secretary, Jairam Ramesh, called on Modi to take a cue from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and stand firm against the US president's economic aggression. Ramesh emphasized that the camaraderie between Modi and Trump, highlighted during the 'Howdy Modi' event, has culminated in little economic or diplomatic advantage for India.
Amidst the political uproar, various leaders have accused Trump's measures of undermining India's sovereignty. Critics also highlight Trump's strategic leverage of trade negotiations and his claims of mediative interventions between India and Pakistan as further strains on India's foreign policy autonomy.
