Violent clashes broke out during the student union election at Kannur University on Wednesday between the ruling CPI(M)-affiliated Student Federation of India (SFI) and the United Democratic Students' Front (UDSF). The unrest resulted in injuries to several students and a police officer, escalating tensions on campus.
The turmoil unfolded with SFI and UDSF members hurling stones and helmets at each other. Police resorted to multiple lathi charges to quell the chaos, as allegations of illegal voting and ballot tampering surfaced. Eventually, SFI claimed all general seats, leading the university union for the 26th time, while MSF won two district executive positions.
Controversy continued as MSF accused an SFI candidate of snatching voter documents, prompting police intervention. SFI, however, denied the allegations, countering with claims of MSF transporting voters from outside. The violence underscores deeper political tensions as police continue to investigate the allegations from both sides.
