The Delhi High Court on Monday called upon the Delhi police to respond to a plea from Asif Iqbal Tanha, challenging charges connected to the Jamia violence case of December 2019 during anti-CAA NRC protests. Justice Sanjeev Narula directed the police to submit their response and scheduled a hearing along with related petitions by Sharjeel Imam and others on October 13.

In March, the Saket court proceeded with framing charges against Tanha, Sharjeel Imam, and others for unlawful assembly, rioting, conspiracy, and property damage by fire. Critics argue these charges are arbitrary, lacking a comprehensive evaluation of the circumstances.

The trial court acknowledged that Tanha was named in the FIR, allegedly for leading a crowd. Imam has also contested the charges, asserting that his speech at Jamia is central to the cases in question. Currently, investigations into these charges continue alongside other cases related to the 2019 and 2020 FIRs.
