In a significant educational policy development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is poised to unveil the State Education Policy (SEP) this Friday at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram, Chennai. The SEP, crafted by a committee led by retired High Court Judge Justice D Murugesan, was submitted in 2024 and has been eagerly anticipated.

This initiative surfaces amidst prolonged opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) proposed by the central government. The DMK-led government of Tamil Nadu has been vocally opposing the NEP, citing concerns over social justice and language imposition. The state has steadfastly refused to implement the NEP, despite facing financial repercussions.

Adding to the controversy, Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court, alleging the withholding of approximately Rs 2,200 crore in central funds as a retaliatory measure against its non-compliance with the NEP. The state contends that its educational funding has been unjustly tied to NEP compliance, labeling it an unconstitutional and arbitrary decision.
