Chrystia Freeland Leaves Cabinet for Ukrainian Reconstruction Role

Prominent Canadian Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland is stepping down from her cabinet position to become Canada's special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday. This decision concludes her 12-year stint in domestic politics.

Freeland, a possible future prime ministerial candidate at one point, lost the Liberal Party leadership to Carney in March. As a minister with Ukrainian heritage and fluency in the language, she played a significant role in formulating Canada's stringent policies against Russia, including extensive sanctions and pledges to support Ukraine financially.

In her exit announcement, Freeland, who also served in various senior roles, including foreign affairs and finance, mentioned she won't be running in the next election. Her resignation led to an internal upheaval, resulting in former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepping down.
