US Eyes Return to Bagram Amid China's Watchful Eye

China has urged that the choice to re-establish a US presence at Bagram Air Base should rest with Afghanistan, responding to former President Trump's comments about the strategic importance of the facility's closeness to China.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted the need for Afghanistan's future to be determined by its own people, stressing that regional tensions should not be increased.

Trump's remarks come amidst US negotiations to reconnect with the interim Taliban-led Afghan government, citing the base's value in monitoring China, which is becoming a notable economic and military competitor.
