In the wake of a reported gangrape in Durgapur, CPI(M) West Bengal State Secretary Mohammed Salim launched a scathing critique of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's contentious comments about women's safety during nighttime. In a statement to ANI on Sunday, Salim challenged whether Banerjee would issue similar advice to men in light of the situation.

Salim further questioned the Chief Minister's belief in gender equality, highlighting a climate of insecurity among women in West Bengal. He argued that the collapse of police and law enforcement under her leadership has compounded the issue, while alleging official protection for perpetrators. He asserted that Banerjee's administration contradicts the legacy of reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, who championed women's rights.

The remarks by Mamata Banerjee, suggesting that girls should not venture out at night, have ignited a political firestorm. Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida criticized the statement, describing it as an insult to the women of West Bengal. Parida insisted on compassionate governance and demanded clarity on Banerjee's stance regarding an Odia girl who is a survivor.
