The Battle for Ballots: Advocating the Right to Vote as Fundamental

In a compelling assertion, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has alleged that the right to vote in India is under significant threat, and it is time for it to be recognized as a fundamental right for citizens.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, Ramesh criticized Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, claiming that the Election Commission's integrity is compromised and advocating for Kumar's removal. He stated, "The rot started under his predecessor. This man is a player and not a neutral observer."

Ramesh emphasized the need for the right to vote to become a fundamental right, stating, "It is a statutory right, not a fundamental right. Fundamental rights are justiciable." He cited historical warnings from B R Ambedkar and Jagjivan Ram about disenfranchisement risks and urged making voting a constitutional guarantee.
