EU Rejects Putin's Proposal for Schroeder as Negotiator
European governments dismissed Vladimir Putin's suggestion of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a representative in future talks with Moscow. EU ministers expressed skepticism about Russia's intentions to end the conflict in Ukraine and negotiate sincerely. They insisted that any negotiation representative should be decided by the EU, not Russia.
European governments have firmly rejected a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to have former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder represent Europe in potential future negotiations with Moscow on continental security issues.
Putin's suggestion, made amidst his claim that the Ukraine war is concluding, was met with skepticism by EU foreign ministers. Arriving in Brussels for a meeting, they questioned Russia's sincerity in negotiating peace and security arrangements for Europe, dismissing Schroeder's potential involvement due to his past ties with Russian state companies.
The EU, adhering to its policy of isolating Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has maintained limited diplomatic contact. While some European officials advocate for direct discussions with Moscow, a consensus emphasizes that any European envoy should be chosen internally, independent of Russian influence.
