Conservative Keiko Fujimori and leftist Roberto Sanchez are leading in Peru's presidential election. With 99.76% of votes counted, Fujimori holds a slight edge with 17.17%, followed by Sanchez at 12%. Final results are expected by May 15 amid logistical delays and fraud allegations.
Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori and leftist contender Roberto Sanchez are neck and neck in Peru's razor-thin presidential election race, according to the latest results from electoral authorities. As of Tuesday, 99.76% of ballots have been tallied.
The National Jury of Elections of Peru announced that the final results will be declared by May 15. This delay comes as logistical failures and fraud allegations have clouded the election process.
Fujimori, daughter of the late former president Alberto Fujimori, is attempting to secure the presidency for a fourth time, leading with 17.17% of the vote. Meanwhile, Sanchez, backed by the imprisoned former president Pedro Castillo, holds 12%, narrowly beating out ultra-conservative Rafael Lopez Aliaga.
