In a significant shift, the Karnataka government has withdrawn its previous directive on school and college uniforms issued on February 5, 2022. The new guidelines, effective immediately, now permit students to wear "limited traditional and faith-based symbols" with their prescribed uniforms. This decision follows an April incident where a student's sacred thread was allegedly cut at a school.

The earlier order, passed by the previous BJP government, had notably banned the wearing of hijabs in classrooms. However, the Congress-led administration now specifies that students can wear certain traditional symbols, including turbans and sacred threads, as long as they complement, but do not alter, the intended purpose of the uniform.

Crucially, the order ensures non-discrimination, stating that no student shall be denied entry to educational spaces for wearing such symbols. It also specifies that no student should be forced to wear or remove these symbols. Authorities are instructed to uphold these guidelines uniformly, drawing from the constitutional principles of equality, dignity, and secularism.

The government emphasized the necessity of implementing this order in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. School and college development committees are urged to foster an inclusive environment that aligns with the ethos of equality and fraternity, as advocated by philosopher Basavanna. The order invalidates any institutional rules that contravene these new guidelines.
