Historic Transition: Rathindra Bose Becomes First North Bengal Speaker
  • Country:
  • India

In a historic development, Rathindra Bose, a BJP MLA from Cooch Behar Dakshin, has been elected unopposed as the Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Assembly, marking a significant political milestone for North Bengal. Bose, known as a key political figure in the region, was backed by all 207 BJP legislators.

The election took place following a nomination proposed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari with pro tem Speaker Tapas Roy conducting the procedures. The absence of a nominee from the TMC ensured a smooth, uncontested election process. This outcome underscores the BJP's growing dominance in the region, demonstrated by the recent successful assembly polls.

Bose's selection is particularly notable as it breaks a longstanding tradition of appointing legal professionals to the Speaker's chair in West Bengal. Bose's elevation is interpreted as a strategic gesture towards North Bengal, which has evolved into a significant stronghold for the BJP over the past decade. His victory is also seen as a signal of changing political preferences and alignments in the state.
