High Voter Turnout Marks Urban Body Elections in Dharamshala and Beyond

In a significant democratic exercise, polling commenced for 51 urban local bodies, including the prominent Municipal Corporations of Dharamshala, Solan, Mandi, and Palampur. Despite the early morning start at 7 am, voter enthusiasm was evident, with substantial queues forming outside polling stations across the regions.
The polling process covered 64 wards under the Municipal Corporations, alongside 229 Municipal Council wards and 156 Nagar Panchayat wards, all in a single-day event. Notably, the elections at the Municipal Corporations are being held on party lines, with counting scheduled for May 31. In contrast, the immediate counting for Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats happens post-poll closure.
By 9 am, voter turnout hit approximately 14 percent, highlighting active civic participation. Notable turnout figures were reported in Mandi and Jogindernagar, at 15.42 percent and 17.10 percent, respectively. In total, 1,147 candidates are competing for 449 available posts, while the electorate consists of 3,60,859 eligible voters, including 1,808 first-time registered voters.
