The Congress Party in India is postponing any decision regarding a leadership change in Karnataka until the completion of the Rajya Sabha elections next month. During recent meetings, which included key figures like Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, leadership concerns were officially avoided according to party statements.

Despite official denials, intense internal discussions took place, particularly involving Siddaramaiah, the current Chief Minister, and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. Sources suggest the party may consider a leadership shift post-elections, with Shivakumar's camp advocating for his elevation based on alleged past commitments.

The persistent speculation about a post-election leadership shakeup is rooted in Shivakumar's assertions of a prior agreement during the 2023 elections, coupled with considerations of Siddaramaiah's age. Additional talks included potential candidates for vacant Rajya Sabha and legislative council seats from Karnataka.

The Congress anticipates securing multiple Rajya Sabha seats and plans to announce its candidates soon, potentially including D K Suresh, Shivakumar's brother. For now, senior Congress figures insist the discussions were solely focused on the upcoming electoral contests.
