An Israeli airstrike struck Gaza City on Tuesday, resulting in the death of Mohammed Odeh, the new leader of Hamas' military wing, along with his wife and two children. This attack occurred less than two weeks after Odeh's predecessor met a similar fate.
The strike coincided with preparations for Eid al-Adha, a significant Muslim holiday. It targeted a market, killing at least five people and injuring twelve. Thousands attended a joint funeral for Odeh and his family members in Gaza City, where mourners expressed their sorrow and anger.
Hamas, in response, condemned the airstrike, recalling Odeh's longstanding involvement with the group. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz justified the attack, labeling Odeh as a vital figure in orchestrating the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks that sparked the ongoing conflict.
As Gaza's residents faced a somber Eid al-Adha, marked by displacement and poverty, Israeli forces pledged continued strikes against those associated with the October 7th assault. The fragile ceasefire remains at risk, with violence persisting on both sides.
