Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun Skips Shangri-La Dialogue Again

Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun will not attend the upcoming Shangri-La Dialogue this week, signaling a continuation of China's cautious stance amid U.S.-China military tensions. Instead, Beijing has dispatched a delegation of experts and scholars from the People's Liberation Army for the event.

This marks the second consecutive year that Dong Jun has skipped the high-level security forum, with the decision coinciding with delicate military relations between the two global giants. Last year, China also sent a low-level delegation, amid accusations from both sides of provocations and escalating regional tensions.

The Chinese delegation faces difficult questions on recent corruption purges within its military ranks, as foreign military attaches express concerns about effects on combat readiness. Despite these challenges, Beijing has recently expressed an intent to improve dialogue and reduce misunderstandings with the U.S.
