In a strategic political maneuver, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) announced on Wednesday the allocation of its quota for the upcoming Rajya Sabha seat election from Tamil Nadu to its ally, the Indian National Congress. The election is slated for June 18, with vote counting and results declaration on the same day.

This decision ensures that Congress, a pivotal ally in the TVK-led coalition in Tamil Nadu, will appoint its candidate for the Upper House seat in question. Such an allocation underscores TVK's commitment to coalition stability and strengthening its alliances. 'For the Rajya Sabha election from Tamil Nadu on June 18, a seat has been designated for the Indian National Congress, part of the TVK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu,' an official TVK communiqué stated.

The allocation offers Congress a significant opportunity to bolster its representation in the Rajya Sabha amidst a period of crucial parliamentary dynamics. This unfolds as the Election Commission, on Monday, declared elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats across ten states.

Official notifications indicate the elections encompass seat distributions such as four each in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat; three in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh; two in Jharkhand; and one each in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Meghalaya. June 8 marks the deadline for filing nominations, with bypolls scheduled in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.

TVK's robust political debut, ousting the traditional DMK-AIADMK binary to emerge as the single-largest party in Tamil Nadu, marked a pivotal shift. Lacking a complete majority, TVK secured Congress support alongside its five seats, aided by several smaller parties like VCK, CPI(M), IUML, and CPI, enabling government formation and passing a floor test with 144 votes. The current Rajya Sabha seat allocation is part of a wider strategic play within TVK's alliance framework ahead of future parliamentary challenges. (ANI)
