The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for several districts in south Bengal and parts of north Bengal starting from May 10. Residents are advised to brace for extreme temperatures.

According to the IMD, hot and humid weather will persist in the region until May 12, as dry westerly to north-westerly winds sweep through south Bengal. Meteorologists predict maximum temperatures to soar above 40°C, significantly exceeding the seasonal norms by at least 5 degrees Celsius.

The affected areas include south Bengal districts such as West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, and West Midnapore, while in north Bengal, North Dinajpur and Malda are on alert for similar heatwave conditions through May 11.
