Barcelona has experienced its hottest June on record, according to Spain's national weather service. The Can Fabra Observatory, situated overlooking the city, reported an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, breaking a record set in 1914.
The previous record was an average of 25.6 degrees Celsius in June 2003. In addition, the station recorded a single-day high of 37.9 degrees Celsius on June 30.
Typically protected from extreme temperatures due to its unique location between hills and the Mediterranean, Barcelona was not immune to the country's first heatwave of the year, affecting most of Spain.
