An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 rocked a remote island in southwestern Japan on Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The epicenter was off the Tokara island chain coast in Kagoshima Prefecture, about 1,200 kilometers from Tokyo. Despite its intensity, no tsunami warning was issued.
Akuseki Island, population 89, felt a seismic intensity that made it "difficult to remain standing." This event follows over 1,000 tremors detected in the region between June 21 and July 3, officials reported.
