The Urban Affairs Department of Meghalaya has successfully relocated street vendors from Shillong's busy Khyndailad area to a newly designated vending zone, officials announced Thursday. The move follows directives from the High Court of Meghalaya to manage street vending and alleviate traffic congestion in the city.

The relocation involved comprehensive consultations with the Town Vending Committee and saw active participation from vendor associations, the Shillong Municipal Board, and district administration. The transition plan, part of the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2023, was designed to ensure a smooth shift for the vendors.

Under the scheme, a survey identified 1,400 vendors, with 407 deemed eligible for a Certificate of Vending. Authorities have allotted 282 of 365 constructed stalls via a transparent draw. Vendors with valid permits are also receiving a relocation package: Rs 10,000 allowance and a monthly Rs 2,000 for five months. This initiative, praised by local vendor associations, is set to expand citywide.
