In a tragic turn of events, a woman and her teenage son lost their lives when a decades-old boundary wall collapsed on their temporary shelter in North Delhi's Sehgal Colony. Just four days after arriving in the city for work, Meera and her son Ganpath were caught in the debris, while other family members sustained injuries.
The family had set up a tin shelter near a residential construction site, working as daily wage laborers. Continuous rainfall and recent construction activities allegedly destabilized the soil, leading to the collapse. Despite local complaints about safety and tree cutting, no preventive measures were taken. Emergency services arrived shortly after locals initiated rescue efforts.
The incident further led to knee-deep waterlogging, affecting nearby homes. A 'red alert' for heavy rainfall was earlier issued for the morning, highlighting the urgent need for better safety protocols amidst ongoing urban development projects.
